Shauna will be presenting some exploratory analysis on reported speech in the British National Corpus (BNC).

Understanding the processes of agreement and disagreement is a fundamental problem in dialogue modelling, and a basic requirement for summarisation systems and the development of tools to support deliberation and discussion online. In this study, we investigate the use of reported speech to investigate the techniques used for the articulation of agreement and disagreement. We highlight some contrasts between how disagreement is reported compared with how it manifests in direct speech, and conclude that reported speech can provide a novel resource for investigating the expression of opinion, agreement and disagreement, and the ways in which they surface in dialogue.
