On The Edge of Your Seat
Sophie Skach, MAT PhD Student QMUL
Abstract: Can we tell, from pressure on a chair alone, whether someone is talking? Being interested in the social performance of rooms and their interior, we looked into sensing capabilites of textile surfaces such as in carpets or furniture covers. For this project, the object of focus became the chair, and we assessed whether patterns of conversational interaction can be detected using only fabric sensors embedded in chair seat covers. We developed textile pressure sensors to collect data about postural behaviour to differentiate speakers from listeners in a seated conversation.
